Creating new products and services is something that all businesses have to do, from cool tech start-ups to stodgy old corporations. One thing is common – it’s hard to do. I mean, there’s so much STUFF to be done! All sorts of things, most of which you don’t know about when you start, and don’t know how to do.
The problem is that we get lost in the stuff. Sometimes it overwhelms us, and we forget what we were trying to do in the first place. Other times, we implement some rock-solid process that is supposed to keep it all under control but actually gains a life of its own, so we end up with the process driving the business, rather than the other way around.
And then there’s what Prime Minister Harold McMillan referred to, when asked what blows governments off course; “Events, my dear boy, events”.
There’s no easy way to follow this path. All you can do is prepare yourself for all dangers and surround yourself with good travelling companions. Enjoy the journey, rise to the challenge and give it your best shot.
It’s human spirit that will get you there in the end.
